Plastic injection mold design is the first and key step for injection molding. Mold design step sets the foundation for the rest of the injection molding project. A good design ensures a successful and high-quality injection molded plastic product.
At Seren Plastik, we are experts in plastic injection mold design. If you need guidance or have questions, we’re here to help. We aim to be your trusted partner, beyond a manufacturer.
After starting a project with us, we’ll provide the plastic injection mold design within 7-10 working days. Once you approve, we’ll move on to the injection mold making and injection molding phase.
Key Steps in Plastic Injection Mold Design
The mold design starts with choosing the right plastic material for injection molding. Next, we decide the best injection molding method to shape this plastic. These decisions help us create the best plastic injection mold design.
Then, we plan how the plastic will enter the injection mold, how to cool the mold, and how the plastic part is removed. We also check for areas where air might be trapped. To make these plans, we use our past experiences, math, and computer tools meant for plastic injection mold design.
Computer-Aided Design for Injection Molds
Before finalizing the mold design, we consider the angles of the plastic product. Completely flat designs might not be best for injection molding. Usually, we keep angles between 0.5-3 degrees, but sometimes it might be different based on the product.
We also consider that plastics can shrink a bit after injection molding. So, the injection mold cavity is slightly bigger to account for this shrinkage.
The next step is planning where the injection mold will open and close and designing its core part, where the plastic goes. This core areas face a lot of pressure during the injection molding process, so we use hardened metals (2344, 2738) and apply special treatments (48-52 HRC).
Injection mold design continues with other parts of the mold like supports and plates. From here, design and actual mold making may start in parallel to gain from time.
Finally, we design the systems to cool the injection mold and remove the finished plastic product. With a few last touches, our plastic injection mold design is complete for technical drawings.
